Foot bath training for a dog and training videoThis dog was in for a modified board and train program. Before he came in for training he injured his toenail badly enough that it needed to be removed. The veterinarian said that he needed a footbath at least twice a day. The foot bath involved soaking the foot for ten minutes or more in warm water and Epsom salt. I could have shaped the dog stepping into the water. Although shaping is fun, I decided to just put his foot in the water and teach him to contently stay for the duration of the foot bath. In this situation I thought that placement and conditioning/training was more expedient than shaping. Probably the most time consuming part of working with
this dog is the constant monitoring that’s needed to ensure he doesn’t
chew on his toe. There are also special requirements for his potty training
that need to be considered. All in all, this dog is doing well with his
predicament.
